Developing leadership among our officers and staff

PAGSASANAY SA TAGUMPAY

Rizal Philippines
July 17, 2017

We need to develop leadership among the BPI staff.   We have new staff, not one is a seasoned matured (with TRM) individual a Holy Gardener.  Many exhibited behavior that shows them wanting in leadership:

Objectives:

1. To have every one from 3ffb staff to the SBU to have clearer understanding of leadership

2.  To gain efficiency and effectiveness

3.  To have apostles, band of leaders to get the company nearer the vision

4.  To be more successful staff, managers, leaders, ie reaching goals, and accomplishing plans

Reality:

      1.  They cant get things done right and time, if all started;

      2.  They often ask for guidance despite being on the job for sometime

     3.  They show resistance, adamance, stubbornnes,

     4. They run away from problems, especially the difficult one, and freeze

     5.  Often answering wala po, wala nang  mangyayari

     6.  Being resource oriented - that all problems can be solved only by more men, money and machinery rather than being resourceful;  having initiative and entrepreneurship (maparaan, madiscarte)

     7. Unable to show good example (being pasaway themselves) and hence to exact obedience from co workers trainees SBUs and subordinates

     This is not to mention that our records are incomplete, in shambles, we do not know the status of our performance (delayed or non existent financial reports) that we intrigue ridden.    SBUs do not submit reports, we have incomplete staffing

3. WTDN

   ABE on leadership for discussion and more understanding:

   What is leadership?

   We often say, the  head leads the tails.  The followers follow the leaders;

   If you want to be a leader, first you must learn how to obey.  Thus apprenticeship is the best form of leadership training. Those who rise from the ranks are the best leaders.  Because they are in touch with reality and with people who move things.

  At Holy Gardens we wrote in the principles:

  1.  To give capable and intelligent direction in the management of business.

      1.  First it requires knowledge and wisdom;   hence we require book reports or internet browsing.  You can not lead, nor teach things that you do not know or have, or understand

     2.  It requires capability:  right attitude, right strategy, being aligned with the people and organization;

    3.  Tops in problem solving;  being able to confront directly and resolutely problems or hindrances to the achievement of goals

2.  To recognize the impact of corporate activities in the community where it operates and hence to contribute to the well being of the community (CSR)

    This calls for inventiveness, thinking out of the box, being out of comfort zone to help others, to be answer to some ones prayer, being a blessing to others. This is thinking out of the box being creative; going beyond the scope of your business to be of service to others

    This is servant leadership

   1.  Being number one in your field;

   2.  Being the influencer in the group/organizastion;

   3.  It is influencing others through your words or action, nothing more  nothing else

   4.  It starts from within;

   5.  It was conceived to be the authority and power granted to those who occupy the position bestowed upon the person by reason of  appointment or election

  6.  The common and new concept, is that every body is a leader no matter what the position in the society or organization.    We are all leaders no matter what:    Even if we are not leaders in our organization:   we are a kuya to your brothers and sister;   a mother or father or a trusted, reliable member of the community.  Each one of us is a leader by default;    We influence all other people we meet; hence the need for leadership in every one

Worth further reading is the book on Heroic Leadership by Chris Lowney, a former Jesuit, who worked at Wall Street, and who found out that the  Ignatian Leadership principles works well in the business environment:

    Heroic Leadership by Chris Lowney:

    There are four simple basic heroic leadership principles

   1.  Self Awareness   this is leadership starting from within.  It is knowing your mindset, your attitude, your strength and weakness. This involves reflection of your mission and vision in life (thus you must have your personal vision and mission statement:

      1. What have I done for my vision mission?

      2.  What am I doing now for my vision mission?

     3.  What will I be doing for my mission and vision

     Knowing that, you must strive to be better everyday.  This involves:

     1. Learning one new thing a day;

     2.  Applying what you learned to your life, to your habits that new thing you learned

    If you learn more, you can teach others more.  If you know more, the more you can navigate the complex problematic world

   It is mastery of your  physical, mental, and emotional health

   It is personal mastery (please see my slideshare on Personal Mastery)

2.  Ingenuity (being a genius, having Logos and Sophia in us)

   Related to:   We do not need more money, more men, more  machinery.  We need more spirit in men.  But frequently, we throw in just more money and resources to solve problems.  Nothing can be far from truth.  Only our dedication, our passion, our discipline our being close to the problem can solve the difficulties and challenges.

   Spiritu -  being enthusiastic, because God is in me.   En theos (God within)   That God gave us power to think and create, because he created us to image and likeness.  He gave us Logos and Sophia (knowledge) to that we can have dominion over his creation.

   It is wise use of our intellect, to create, to think of new ideas, to make this world a better place

3.  Love

     "Put a little love in your heart, and this world will be a better place for you and me"

     To engage others with positive, bubbling great attitude. And to energize them for action, for service to others too.  Not to give up in view of adversities.  To be persistent and determined to see the beauty of their dreams for the world

     Even in military leadership, love is an important principle.  You will let your men eat first.  The General eat last.   Alexander the Great was noted that when they had shortage of water in march in a place near what is called Iran, he refused  to drink because his men had no water to drink.  Gone are the days, when commanders order their soldiers to cross heavy artillery or machine gun fire. They are now concerned with survivability of their men, and are inconsolable when they  have casualties.  Gone are the days "Goddam leaders"

    Chef you cook great food say that they put their love into the menu or the food preparation that is why it tastes so good.  Our service, or plots our parks will not be outstanding, unless we put our love into the work.  It is not supposed to be love of earning.  But love or learning, our business and customers.

    That is a great difficulty.   The biological mission of married women is to take care of their children and their husbands. To please and make their husbands happy.

    That is a great difficulty.

     Single ladies can be relied upon to love their work, the business and customers

4.  Heroism-  Magi

    In search of excellence of being of service to others.

    To raise the bar always.  To energize yourself towards worthy and high ambition, to make this world a better place.   To lessen pain, suffering, improve the quality of life.  to lessen traffic, pollution pasaway in the world.  To remove parochialism,  to expand the thinking and capability of other people through mentoring.

    To be like a hero;  not in the battlefield but to be the best you can be always
