CLEANING:
Laptop/Computer

Benefits:

Laptop cleaning is a quick fix for sticky keys and blurred screens. In just a few minutes, cleaning also can improve the overall performance of your notebook.

Cleaning Tools
Tool for cleaning a laptop are easy to find and inexpensive. A lint free cloth and an old toothbrush will generally do the job. However, for some areas of cleaning, in place of the toothbrush you may want to use compressed air or invest in a computer vacuum.
1. Turn off your laptop. Give it a minute or so to totally power down and then unplug it.
2. Clean your screen. LCD screens are fragile. Do check your manufacturer’s recommendation for the best way to clean yours.
However, in most cases, all you need do is wipe it with a damp cloth, making sure to wring out all excess moisture.
Most important, unless your manufacturer recommends differently, don’t use alcohol or ammonia based cleaners.
3. Wipe down the keyboard. Remove crumbs and debris using your toothbrush (or compressed air or vacuum). Wipe again.
4. Remove dust and debris from vents with the toothbrush. The propellant in compressed air may contain moisture.
Some manufacturers suggest that computer vacuums may damage electronic components. Remember always to check your manufacturer’s recommendations.
Tip: Always use a lint free cloth to clean your computer. Instead of picking up debris, paper toweling can scratch your screen and leave paper lint on your machine.

Tip: Never spray any cleaner directly onto your computer. Always wet the cloth with the cleaner whether using water, a homemade solution, or a commercial preparation.

STORAGE:

Proper Storage of Your Laptop

Laptop computers can go anywhere or be put anywhere. With a fully charged battery, your laptop has a home wherever you go!
1. Beyond that, you can place your laptop anywhere you like: on the kitchen table, the coffee table, a real desk, a computer desk, or in bed with you.
2. You should keep the laptop on a flat, steady surface. Also try to keep it away from, or out of spilling range of, any drinks or food you might be consuming.
3. If your laptop doesn't have a permanent home, create a consistent storage place for it. You can keep the laptop in a drawer, bookcase, or cupboard, or in the box with the rest of the laptop stuff. Keep it in the same place means that you can always find it when you need it.
4. Avoid putting the laptop in a spot where it can overheat. Today's laptops get hot all by themselves, and anything you can do to help keep the laptop cool is good.
5. When the laptop has a docking station or port replicator, try to keep that part in the same place all the time. Set up a desk and put the docking station or port replicator in one spot.
6. You might also keep various peripherals — such as a printer, big keyboard, mouse, full-size monitor, scanner, and other toys — ready to go and plugged in.

USAGE:

How to take good care of your Laptop:
1. Keep liquids away from your laptop.
2. Have available antivirus software would help
3. Keep food away from your laptop.
4.Protect the LCD display monitor.
5. Hold and lift the computer by its base, not by its LCD display (the screen).
6. Don't roll your chair over the computer cord.
7. Handle any removable drives with care.
8. Insert drives into their slots carefully and at the correct angle.
9. Check to see if labels are affixed securely before inserting media into your laptop computer.
10. Don't expose your laptop to rapid temperature changes.
11. Don't leave your laptop in a car.
12. Avoid placing heavy materials, such as books, on top of your laptop and keyboard.
13. Use a properly-sized laptop case.
14. Look into getting a laptop bag.
15. Use and store in a well-ventilated area.
16. Use an old toothbrush to clean the area around the exhaust fan screen.
17. Try and keep the laptop on a flat, clean surface.
18. Don't use your laptop on the bed.

Warnings (COMPUTER/LAPTOP)
  • If you are not going to use the laptop or the computer for the next two hours, shut it down. The energy it takes to start it up is far less than the energy it will take if the laptop is running continuously.
  • Be aware of the "no excess" or "zero excess" of some laptop insurance companies; while it appears to be free of excess, you may have to pay again for the year in full to restart your insurance after a claim.
  • On the other hand, leaving a laptop, or any electronic device for that matter, on instead of frequently switching it on/off will avoid the heating/cool-down cycle that is ultimately injurious to components.
  • Pets (like parrots that fixate on clicking, shiny objects) and children should be supervised when within a close proximity of your laptop.
  • Avoid putting your laptop on a carpet. The air vents on the back of the laptop help air to travel in and out. Anything which blocks the air vents is preventing hot air from escaping and only invites it back in again, which can result in overheating; leading to excessive lag and potential damage. Placing your laptop in a drawer has similar consequences.

Tips

·         Press the buttons softly so that they do not get peeled off.

·         Keep a record of your laptop computer details, such as serial number, make and model so that you can report theft or loss promptly.

·         Keep your laptop away from small children.

·         If you are working, you may have an opportunity to choose your laptop computer based on your requirements - for example, a sturdy model for rough use or a light one for frequent travel.

·         Keep your laptop in a open area that has air circulation, when in use.

·         You can make an easy screen protector from a thin piece of floppy foam cut the size of your screen. Place this between the base and top of your laptop each time that you turn off the laptop and close it. Do not leave it in there if the laptop is only sleeping or is not turned off. If the laptop overheats, this foam may cause the laptop to combust.

·         Put a label with your name, e-mail, cell phone number or other contact details on the laptop, the power cord and any other removable parts.

·         Develop a preventive maintenance schedule to prevent problems rather than fixing them after they happen.

·         Look into laptop insurance. Look for sites on the internet but beware the "Zero excess" or "no excess" claim of a few.

·         You can make your own laptop case using items such as 2 pieces of cardboard joined together with strong tape and insert bubble wrap, or even a pillow slip, in between the cardboard. Make sure you get the measurements accurate! Or recycle an old bag - pad it well and size it down to fit your laptop securely.

HANDLING:
Computers are one of the most desirable electronic gadgets in our daily routine. Computers are expensive and need extra care in handling. Here are some valuable tips for handling the computer. Keep in mind these simple tips can give long life to your computer or laptops.
Tip 1: Do not put any heavy article on computers or laptop. Avoid spilling liquids into your computers. Try to place your laptop on hard surface and do not keep it on bed for very long time.
Tip 2: If you have laptop. Use backpack designed for it. Computer display is delicate, do not hit or scratch it. Avoid placing any objects in between screen and keyboard.
Tip 3: Maintain the temperature in between 41-95 °F and do not place computer above or below this range. It can cause serious damage to your computer.
Tip 4: Make at least 13 cm distance between your computer and these devices like Motor, magnet, TV, refrigerator and large audio speakers.
Tip 5: Never mount your computer anywhere hardly or in any vehicle which is vibrating.
Tip 6:Hold it with edges and avoid touching lens of DVD/CD ROM. Place your discs in cover and avoid scratches on it. You may lose your data if your discs are not placed properly.
Tip 7: If your computer is connected with internet through modem, avoid connecting it with digital phone lines. It may cause harm to your computer, Using Ethernet port is safer way.
Tip 8: Cleaning the computer is the most important part in handling. Using soft lint free cloth moistened with non-alkaline smooth detergent for wiping.
Avoid any kind of spray on computer and keyboard. Cleaning of CD and DVD can increase life of your CD/DVD ROM. LCD should be wipe with moisten LCD cleaner and dry after that is necessary.
A mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water (1:1) may also be used to moisten cloth for LCD cleaning. (Caution: Isopropyl alcohol is flammable so avoid using it near flame). Kim wipes and antistatic LCD cleaning cloths can also be used for cleaning. By following these tips you can sidestep many problems.

MEMORY:
Keep Track of Capacity;
It is also important to pay attention to the memory capacity.

Laptop Memory and Storage:

A laptop's memory can make up for some of the reduced performance that comes from a slower processor. Some laptops have cache memory on or very near the CPU, allowing it to access data more quickly. Some also have larger busses, allowing data to move between the processor, motherboard and memory more quickly.
Laptops often use smaller memory modules to save space. Memorytypes used in laptops include:
·         Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Module (SODIMM)
·         Dual Data Rate Synchronous RAM (DDR SDRAM)
·         Single data rate Synchronous RAM (SDRAM)
·         Proprietary memory modules
Some laptops have upgradeable memory and feature removable panels for easy access to the memory modules.
Like a desktop, a laptop has an internal hard disk drive, which stores the operating system, applications and data files. However, laptops generally have less disk space than desktops. A laptop hard drive is also physically smaller than that of a desktop. In addition, most laptop hard drives spin more slowly than desktop hard drives, reducing both heat and power consumption.
Desktop computers have multiple bays for installing additional drives, such as CD and DVD ROM drives. However, space in a laptop is in much shorter supply. Many laptops use a modular design, allowing a variety of drives to fit in the same bay. These drives come in three different designations:
·         Hot swappable - The computer can stay on while changing the drive.
·         Warm swappable - The computer can stay on while changing the drive, but the corresponding bus (the path the drive uses to send data to the CPU) must be inactive.
·         Cold swappable - The computer must be off during the swap.
In some cases, these drive bays are not just limited to drives but will also accept extra batteries.
