GROW - PAGPUPULONG TUNGO SA KAUNLARAN

The Next Level - What Insiders Know About Executive Success
Recently, our Senior Managing Director, Jorge U. Saguinsin had his conference from Seoul Korea and after his return we had viewed all the beautiful pictures in Korea that are of great help in improving not only the appearance of our memorial park but also in improving ourselves and our deeper understanding of our # 4 Beliefs: "Flexibility and Adaptability - we will promptly, proactively and creatively learn to adjust to local and global changes as individual and as a group".

First, it has something to do with the Law of the Lid by John C. Maxwell, no one can do things alone.  Leadership ability determines a person's level of effectiveness.  We must be aware of what is happening with the world because we are affected of its changes.  We must know what the world knows.

Second, how do we move to the next level? Jim Estill mentioned on his blog the following:

The Next Level starts with a list of  FOUR (4) REASONS WHY EXECUTIVES FAIL:

1.  Ineffective Communication - in reality, we often fail in this aspect.
We cannot move forward if we often have failure in communication and
this is the main purpose of this blog, to COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY
     towards our SHARED VISION;

2.  Poor Work Relationships and Interpersonal Skills - be sensitive to
other's work.  Again, belief # 4 applies here, we must be flexible enough
to do the other jobs, that is why we have ancillary task in our job
     description;

3.  Failure to Clarify Direction or Performance Expectations -
everyone must fully aware of our target, its breakdown and steps on how
to achieve it must be clearly explained and understood. We must have
common understanding of what we are aiming for; This our score card or
     KRAPI

4.  Failure to Adapt and Break Old Habits - Old habits that do not
contribute in our growth, it must be broken and replaced with new
and effective one.  If it doesn't work, discard it and move to the
    next level.

It attacks these problems with a table which lists things to do and things to drop to move to the next level. Each chapter then elaborates individually on each item on the chart with how to ideas.

One datapoint that I found interesting is high potential leaders "regularly seeks out knowledge and experience to perform at higher levels". This is something that we must always practice. We would like to envision what it would be like to sell $X and have Y employees - what would I need to know, how would I need to act. Then we set about to learn and study. I think this has been how the author was fortunate enough to scale from running a business from the trunk of his car up to $2 Billion in sales. He study. So let us study. Never stop in reading and learning.

The book even had a section on the author's favourite topic "what should I repeatedly do".

The book suggests using the GROW method to solve problems:

Goal - Objectives
Reality - Where are we now?
Options - Alternatives
Whats Next - What to do Next

    Things Learned from the Article

    1. GROW method to solve problems: Goal (Objectives) Reality (Where are we now) Options (Alternatives) What’s Next (What to do next)

    2. Four reasons why executives fail: Ineffective communication, Poor work relationships and interpersonal skills, Failure to clarify direction or performance expectations and failure to adapt and break old habits.

    3. Leadership ability determines a person’s level of effectiveness. A high potential leader regularly seeks out knowledge and experience to perform at higher levels.

Relationship to What I Already Know

We are facing difficulties today in terms of sales and collection. Employees are enjoined to be aware of this challenge and crisis. As the saying goes, “No man is an island” or the need of others. We need to help one another and look for a solution that lay beneath our hands. We must be a solution finder and not a problem giver in the organization. We must have to move forward and improve ourselves better in terms of:
    - Engagement and awareness on new policies and prompt execution are all part of effective communication.
    - We must be flexible and exercise multi tasking within the SBU.
    - Changing our old habits and adapt things that contribute to our growth.
    - Embrace our targets. One of the secrets of success is knowing what you want. If we know well our targets then we know where we are going and what steps we should make to achieve them. Having passion and love in our hearts in everything that we do to achieve possibilities.

So part of this is the continuous learning and reading. We need to seek knowledge by studying things that best improve our skills and our organization. That’s why we have blog sites, articles and topics in slide share for us to study and reflect from considering what we should know and how we need to act to GROW not only for ourselves but for our organization more importantly.

    What to Do Next:

    1. Read more articles and books that is helpful in my leadership ability and self improvement,
    2. Sharpening my mind through observing, reading and learning in a very positive way.
    3. Always have a plan. Include other options/alternatives to be done.
    4. Break old habits and replace with an effective one.
    5. IWAN (I Will Act Now). Hastening the pace in everything that I will do.

  3. One key role of any leader is to coach team members to achieve their best. "Coach" or mentor, you will typically help your team members to solve problems, make better decisions, and learn new skills or otherwise progress in their role or career.

G represents your Goals What do you want to happen?

R represents your Reality What is happening now?

O represents your Options What could you do?

W represents your Will What will you do?

  4. The GROW method is useful in clarifying what we want to achieve and how we will achieve it. Our desire to achieve excellence in everything we do can be possible with our knowledge and proper understanding towards establishing GOALs (defining our objectives), examining the current REALITY (where we are now?); exploring the OPTIONS (alternatives or possible choices or suggestions of actions through thinking creatively), and WHAT’s NEXT ( WTDN what to do next or what exactly the action plan is). With this, we can possibly determine where we are going… especially in SALES and COLLECTION and our struggle in hitting the TARGETS... As part of it, each of us will be inspired --- that each of us may establish the will to grow and the will to succeed.. so let us all G.R.O.W.

  5. Everyone in the company should have an open communication with everyone to have a healthy and more effective working relationship. People with more experience should guide other employees who are having hard times doing their jobs. We must have the right attitude in order to help the company and ourselves grow.

  6. There are four reasons why executives fail:
First, ineffective communication - in an organization communication is our tool to be able to reach for our goal and to understands one another it also had an integral part in an organization to communicate the details that should be done. Second, poor work relationships and Interpersonal skills - it is important to have an interaction with your co-worker for you to know what are the problems that they've encounter like in our organization we have forum every morning wherein we discuss some learning that we can apply on our work, we also discuss some issues that needed to be solved. Third, failure to clarify direction or performance expectations - it should be well understood that every one of us in an organization has a key role to practice Mission, Vision, Beliefs and Principles of our organization, "why you where here?" that is the question that will stay on our mind for us to be motivated to do our assigned tasks done. Fourth, Failure to adapt and break old habits - we should practice to be efficient and effective doing things done. G R O W - G stands for our Goal: "what are our objectives" - it is important for us to know our objectives for us to be motivated why we were doing this, what we will get? R stands for Reality: "Where are we now?" hitting our main goals our objectives facing the reality not all theory, applications alibis that we cannot reach for it! O stands for Options: Alternatives - we must know some key alternatives don't focus on one idea we have to be creative, innovations. Last is W stands for What's Next - think of solutions to the problems that we encounter be a solutions to the problems.
